Botox®, botox, botox… what is this stuff anyway?!? In today’s blog, we are taking an in-depth look at the benefits of Botox. We’ll be explaining what it is, what it can be used for, and digging a little into the science behind this very neat medical and cosmetic tool.
Botox injections are one of the most common procedures done in aesthetic medicine today, leading to lots of happy fresh-faced clients. But, it also comes with its share of horror stories of frozen faces and botched jobs. So what exactly is it, and how does it work?
What is Botox?
First of all, one of the most important distinctions to make is that Botox is a brand name, just like Kleenex® or BandAid®. Everyone knows that when you say Kleenex you want a tissue, and when you say BandAid, you want an adhesive bandage. Similarly, in the aesthetic world, we know that clients want a certain result when they say they want some Botox.
At ClaraDerma+, when a client comes in asking for Botox we usually hear a few variations of the same story. Patients want to look ‘fresh,’ ‘less tired,’ or even ‘not so angry.’ They want their frown lines to go away. They want their forehead wrinkles to soften. Sometimes they are looking for something to help their crow’s feet.
All of this can be achieved with Botox- well, botulinumtoxin type A.
The Science of Botox
So here comes the science. What is botulinumtoxin type A? It is the main component in Botox injections.
Botulinumtoxin type A is a purified form of neurotoxin that works to inhibit muscle activity. It stops the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, temporarily relaxing the muscles. Its effects wear off between 90-120 days (3-4 months), and at that point, the muscle returns to normal activity.
In Canada, we have 3 brands: Botox, Xeomin®, and Dysport®. At ClaraDerma+ we use both Botox and Xeomin and we are not here to promote one over the other. Our nurse injector loves the results from both Botox and Xeomin.
And Now- The Benefits of Botox
So how does it help to give you refreshed look? A little more science, with pictures!
Many clients come in looking for a solution to the wrinkles that have been formed between their eyebrows or on their forehead from the action of the muscle underneath. They feel those wrinkles make them look tired, or angry, or just plain “blah.” By using Botox or Xeomin to relax the muscle causing those wrinkles, we give the face a chance to reduce any wrinkles already formed and prevent others from forming or deepening. A relaxed muscle is smooth and tight looking, meaning that the skin overtop also looks smooth and tight. Voila, a refreshed face is born!
So does this mean you can’t move your face at all?
Yes and no. It all depends on what the client is looking for. Some patients don’t want any movement in order to prevent wrinkles from forming. Others want some movement for a more natural look. Both can be done with the expert assessment of our nurse injector at ClaraDerma+. She likes to do “baby botox” for her clients to help them achieve that smooth and tight look while still maintaining a natural result.
What if I don’t like the look?
Something to consider with Botox or Xeomin is that once it’s been injected you can’t reverse it. This means you will have to wait the 90-120 days for it to wear off. However, more can always be added. That’s why our nurse injector will usually suggest a conservative approach first and a two-week follow-up to see if you would like more added. This is another one of those benefits of Botox- dosage can be adjusted according to a patient-specific basis.
What if I’m young and don’t have wrinkles yet?
Botox or Xeomin for prevention is one of our nurse injector’s favourite things. She started adding Botox and Xeomin into her skin care routine at 28 years old to help prevent wrinkles from forming in the first place. As a preventative tool, Botox and Xeomin are both great to use.
What if I’m older and don’t want to look fake or overdone?
If you are considering Botox or Xeomin as a mature patient with some life and laugh lines already on your face, a conservative look is the way to go. Our nurse injector will always sit with you to discuss what you’d like to achieve to make sure you won’t be frozen-faced or too obvious to anyone. A good job will leave people asking if you’ve had your hair done or gone on vacation, because of how rejuvenated you look.
What else can Botox or Xeomin be used for?
Other benefits of Botox include eyebrow lifts, helping with face symmetry (eyebrows), gummy smile, marionette lines, hooded eyelids, and excessive sweating.
In the aesthetic toolkit, Botox and Xeomin are great products that can help achieve a refreshed look that is natural and complementary. Always ask your injector questions and don’t be afraid to discuss the look you want! At ClaraDerma+, we always provide a complimentary consultation for patients who need advice, answers, or more information.
