What Is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal procedures are some of the most popular treatments done in North America. The treatments are incredibly useful for removing unwanted hair from anywhere on the body. Treatment areas can include:

  • Face
  • Hands
  • Arms
  • Legs
  • Underarms
  • Bikini line
  • Back
  • Any other area of concern

The treatment works by beaming a highly concentrated light into the hair follicles. The pigment in the follicles absorbs the light, which destroys the hair from the root. It’s important before your appointment for laser hair removal to stop all hair removal except for shaving for 3 weeks prior to the appointment. This means no plucking, waxing, depilatory creams or electrolysis. The treatment targets the root of the hair, and by plucking or waxing you may temporarily remove the root, and the treatment will not be effective.

For our laser hair removal treatments, we use the Soprano XL, a diode laser by Alma Lasers.

Useful for Treating:

What to Expect
At Your Appointment

As the patient, you must arrive to the appointment having cleanly shaved the treatment area the night prior.  The technician will adjust the laser equipment, which will be calibrated based on skin colour, as well as the colour and thickness of the hair. You will be required to wear safety eyewear for the duration of the treatment for your protection, which we will provide for you at your appointment.  The treatment may feel like an elastic band snapping against your skin and you may experience a sunburn sensation during or after the appointment.

What to Expect
After Your Appointment

Immediately after the treatment, the technician will apply sunscreen to the treated area if exposed to the sun. It’s important to wear sunscreen throughout your treatment course.  Following the appointment, your skin may look and feel like you have a mild sunburn for a few days. The best way to treat this is by ensuring your skin stays moisturized, and to apply cool compresses if necessary.

Over the next month, the treated hair will fall out. To prevent any skin discolouration ensure that skin is properly moisturized, and SPF sunscreen is applied frequently. In rare cases, you may see blistering, swelling, or redness.

You will need to continue laser hair removal treatments until the hair in the treatment area stops growing completely. The treatments should be spaced out between 4-6 weeks, depending on treatment area and intensity, to ensure proper healing of the area.
