What Are Facial Vein Treatments?

Also known as telangiectasia, or spider veins, many people experience the look of veins becoming more prominent, typically on their face. On the face, a common reason for facial veins are age, heredity, trauma to the face, medical treatments (chemotherapy) or rosacea.

The appearance of facial veins can be combated using Intense Pulsed Light (IPL). IPL therapy selectively targets and eliminates the veins. For small veins, IPL collapses the vein wall immediately while larger veins may subside over 3-4 days and could require additional treatment to be completely eliminated.

What to Expect
At Your Appointment

Depending on the severity of the issue and the size of the treatment area, the treatments can take anywhere from 15 minutes up to 45 minutes. When your appointment begins, the medical aesthetician will begin with a handheld device to deliver pulses of light to the affected area. The light shuts down the vessel by coagulation, reducing the appearance of the veins.

As a non-invasive procedure, the facial vein treatments are relatively pain-free. The treatment has been described as feeling like a rubber band being snapped on the skin.

What to Expect
After Your Appointment

After the appointment, there are usually no lasting effects, aside from the reduced look of the spider veins. You may return immediately back to work or to everyday activities. You may experience some slight redness or mild swelling.

For most people, at first facial veins will darken, but not noticeably. They will then lighten and eventually fade completely as they heal. This process can take anywhere from 14 up to 30 days. The healing time will vary based on the size of the treated area.

Depending on how many veins you are treating, and the severity of the veins, you may require only one treatment. More severe cases may need multiple treatments, with a minimum of one month’s time between appointments, to completely remove the appearance of the veins.
